This year, 2012, sees the 200th birthday of one of times most loved writers - Charles Dickens. Author of such memorable titles as "A tale of 2 cities", "Great Expectations" and "A Christmas Carol", Dickens continues to receive well deserved respect even today.
Born Charles John Huffam Dickens on 7 February 1812, his early years were idyllic and he spent much time reading. However, around age 11-12 his father, John, was sent to Marshalsea Debtor's Prison, and young Dickens was forced to leave school and take a job at a boot blacking factory for 10 hours a day. Even after his father inherited money and paid his debts, Charles's mother was reluctant to release him from work, fostering deep feelings of hatred toward women in him.
Yet, despite a lack of education, and a childhood that can hardly be described as loving and congenial, Charles Dicken remains, unarguably, the greatest writer of the Virian Period.
